AI answers are pushing the grooming map pack down the phone screen

By Steve Meitler · 2026-08-26 · 4 min read

Local searches for a groomer now return an AI summary naming two or three shops before the map pack loads. What that changes for a grooming business, and why.

Pull up "dog groomer near me" on a phone in most metros now and count what appears before you scroll. Often an AI-generated summary, naming a few businesses and paraphrasing their reviews. Then ads. Then, eventually, the three map results that grooming shops have spent a decade trying to reach.

The map pack has not gone anywhere. It has moved down, and on a phone, down the screen is functionally the same as gone for a meaningful share of people.

Why grooming is affected more than most trades

Emergency trades are protected by urgency. A person with water in the hallway does not read a summary paragraph, she taps the first number she sees.

Grooming searches are the opposite. They are considered, they are specific, and they are full of the exact language an assistant is good at handling: "who can groom a matted goldendoodle near Gilbert," "groomer for an anxious senior dog," "how much does a poodle groom cost." Those queries produce a paragraph answer far more often than "plumber near me" does. And the paragraph names two or three shops.

What decides which shops get named

Not your bid, and not your rank, exactly. From what is observable, three things carry most of the weight.

Specific, quotable text. A sentence like "We groom doodles, poodles and double-coated breeds in Chandler and Gilbert, full grooms from $60 and doodle grooms from $95, one dog at a time and no cage dryers" can be lifted whole into an answer. A hero banner reading QUALITY PET CARE cannot. This is the single largest gap in the niche, because 26.3% of grooming businesses have no website at all, and most of the rest have no sentences worth quoting.

Reviews with nouns in them. Star ratings barely differentiate anyone. 78.9% of grooming listings sit at 4.5 or above, so the rating is not a signal. Review text is. Fifty reviews mentioning matting, seniors, doodles and specific towns feed the exact questions being asked. Two hundred saying "great job" feed nothing.

Corroboration from somewhere else. A vet clinic resources page, a rescue's partner list, the independent pet store, a neighborhood paper. Assistants weigh mentions they did not get from you.

The uncomfortable arithmetic

If the answer names three groomers and there are sixty in your city, the field just got narrower than the map pack ever was. Three of sixty is worse odds than three of the ten that Google used to show on a local results page.

That cuts the other way too. In our dataset the median grooming business has 38 reviews and 40% have fewer than 25. Most of your competitors have neither a website with real sentences on it nor enough recent review text to be summarized. The bar for being one of the three named is lower than the panic suggests.

Five things to do this month

Write eight plain answers. Breed coverage, price ranges, groom duration, cage drying, senior and anxious dogs, cats, vaccination requirements, service area. Two to four sentences each, on your own site and again in the Q and A section of your Google profile. This is one evening of work and it is the highest-leverage thing on the list. Full walkthrough in the AI search guide.

Publish a price range. Not exact prices, a starting price by size and coat with the honest caveat that condition changes it. Assistants quote numbers when numbers exist. Owners choose the shop that gave them one.

Ask for reviews that name things. Change the ask at the counter from "leave us a review" to "if you can, mention it was a doodle full groom in Gilbert." That one clause changes what your review corpus is good for. Scripts in the reviews guide.

Get named on two local sites that are not yours. Ask the vet clinic that already refers you to add you to its resources page. Groom two rescue intakes a month and ask to appear as a partner. That is two afternoons and it lasts for years.

Check you are not blocked. Some site builders disable AI crawlers by default in a privacy setting. If GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended are disallowed in your robots.txt and you did not intend that, you have opted yourself out of the answers.

What has not changed

The badge, the summary and the layout are all screening devices. They get you into the consideration set. The pet owner still reads your reviews, still looks for a photo of a dog like hers, and still decides on the phone or the DM in the first two minutes.

So the fundamentals did not move. The order did. What used to be "rank in the map pack, then convert" is becoming "be quotable, then rank, then convert." All three still require a complete profile, a steady stream of recent reviews, a site that answers real questions, and somebody who replies before the next groomer does.

Google has redesigned the local results four times in five years and will do it again. Every version of it has rewarded the same short list. Build that list and the layout stops mattering much.
